What Is the Gender Change Feature?
The Gender Change system is a new feature launching with the September 2026 update in Ragnarok: The New World. It allows players to permanently switch their character's gender, unlocking different cosmetic appearances, hairstyles, and voice sets while preserving all combat progress, inventory, levels, and achievements.
Gender Change addresses long-standing community requests from classic Ragnarok Online players who wanted to experience the opposite avatar without losing their character's history. The feature is purely cosmetic — combat stats, skills, gear, and progression remain identical after switching.
How to Use Gender Change
Access Gender Change through Settings → Character → Change Gender in the main client menu. The interface displays your current appearance, available opposite-gender options for your current job, and a preview before confirmation. Some customization options such as specific hairstyles or face presets may differ between genders due to model differences — preview carefully before committing.
On confirmation, the system applies a 3-day grace period during which you can revert to your original gender for free if the new appearance does not meet your expectations. After the grace period expires, a 14-day cooldown begins before another Gender Change becomes available. Plan your switch deliberately — the cooldown applies regardless of whether you used the free revert.
Grace Period and Cooldown Rules
The 3-day grace period starts the moment you confirm the Gender Change. During these three days, the Revert option costs no additional resources and immediately restores your original gender, appearance, and customization. Use this window to evaluate hair, face, body proportions, and voice sets before the final commitment.
After the grace period closes, the 14-day cooldown prevents another Gender Change. The cooldown timer displays on the character screen so you can plan your next switch. This prevents abuse of gender-specific cosmetic exploits and ensures the feature remains a meaningful commitment rather than a casual toggle.
What Is Preserved and What Resets
Preserved after Gender Change: base level, job level, all skills and stat points, equipment and inventory contents, gold and currency balances, achievement progress, guild membership, marriage status, card slots and enchant history, mount and pet data, all quest progress.
Changes with Gender Change: character model and proportions, hairstyle and face options (new pool from opposite gender), voice lines and combat grunts, gender-specific cosmetic wardrobe items (some items are gender-locked — they go to wardrobe overflow and cannot be equipped until you switch back), gender-specific titles or emotes.
Some gender-exclusive headgears or costumes may not transfer to the opposite gender slot. Test equip before finalizing your switch if you own rare gender-locked cosmetics.
Practical Uses and Community Context
Common reasons players use Gender Change include experiencing different avatar aesthetics, accessing gender-specific cosmetic collections, or simply matching a preferred play identity. The feature has no impact on combat viability — your DPS, healing throughput, and support capabilities remain identical regardless of gender.
On servers with limited character creation slots, Gender Change provides a free identity refresh without deleting progress. Couples using the Romance and Marriage system can both switch genders without affecting the marriage bond.
