Crafting, Forging & Blacksmith System

Crafting in ROW — What Is and Is Not Craftable

Ragnarok: The New World borrows the Blacksmith forge line from classic RO and modernizes it for open-world play. The Blacksmith NPC in Prontera accepts raw ores, monster drops, and crafted materials to produce weapons, armor, refine protection stones, and element crystals. Unlike purely random refine, crafting output is recipe-driven: the right materials in the right slot guarantee a specific tier of weapon or armor.

Three pillars run the system: Smelting refines raw ores into ingots, Forging combines ingots and cloth/leather into gear, and Element Crafting imbues an existing weapon with a fire/water/wind/earth crystal. Many SEA launch weapons sold on the Exchange come from forging — not gacha — so every player can craft top-tier gear if they farm the materials.

Material Tiers and Where to Farm Them

Ores drop in five tiers, color-coded from rough (white) to star (orange). The higher the tier, the more characters are required to craft. Open the Blacksmith UI and tap Material Index to see every recipe's location and drop chance.

TierSample oreTypical fieldBest early use

Combine runs: a Mage sweeping Star Crumb and Iron Ore in the same Geffen loop is more efficient than two separate trips. Plan your route with Farming Spots and the Leveling Guide.

How to Forge a Weapon

Step-by-step forge sequence used by every Korean and SEA launch reference guide:

1. Open the Blacksmith NPC → Forge Equipment tab. 2. Pick the recipe matching your class — every Job 2 line lists its signature weapon plus an alternative elemental version. 3. Place the listed ingots, monster drops, and (for higher tiers) a Mass Smith Hammer in the slots. 4. Confirm; the result is bound on receive unless the recipe marks it account-shared.

Mass Smith Hammer boosts the success rate of high-tier recipes — keep one in your bag for any T4 or T5 craft. Some recipes also require a Zenith Forge Unlock earned through a one-time quest chain that opens after level 55. Plan the unlock on your main; alt characters do not need to repeat the chain if your guildmate unlocks it guild-wide.

Forging returns the exact item but with random sub-stat lines; reroll sub-stats through the Polish menu (Zeny cost per reroll). Do not polish the same item twenty times in a row — settle on two solid lines and accept variance.

Element Crafting — Imbues and Stones

After you forge or buy a weapon, take it to Brynhildr the Elementalist in the Prontera crafting hall. Pay an element stone + Zeny to imbue the weapon with Fire, Water, Wind, Earth, Holy, Shadow, or Ghost affinity. The bonus damage against weakness targets can exceed 30% at max rank — a free DPS upgrade once you finish a weapon's first polish pass.

Stone source: Element fragments drop from corresponding themed dungeons — Farming Spots lists Sograt (Earth), Payon Cave (Water), Geffen Tower (Wind), and Comodo Island (Fire). Higher stones require Star Stones as catalyst; spend Star Stones only on the weapon you will keep three months, not experiment gear. Read Star Stones Guide first.

Element imbuing is permanent on the bound weapon; re-imbue costs only Zeny and a new stone, so swap elements freely when you change farming zones. PvP-only weapons often run Ghost element to bypass Holy shields.

Refine Protection and Safe Upgrades

Crafted weapons still use the standard refine system, and safe refinement up to +15 means even brand-new forgers can chase upgrade levels without risk of destruction. Plan ore usage with the Refine Cost Planner before hammering. Combine weekly refine boosts from Weekly Reset Schedule with your craft session to maximize efficiency.

Use Blessed Ores from events for +8 to +10 pushes; they grant one click of guaranteed success. After +10, switch to Mass Smith Hammer stacks (success rate plus, no destroy) until +15. Reading the Refine & RNG Systems page prevents wasted materials on broken RNG strategies.

Blacksmith Class Synergies

The Merchant / Blacksmith archetype is the only class with innate crafting discounts — a 5–10% material cost reduction depending on Blacksmith passive level. Even non-Blacksmith characters benefit from a guildmate's discount during joint crafting sessions. Read Merchant Build for the economy angle.

Druid players can stay in Human / Nature Mage form to use crafting stations without de-transform cooldown. Other classes can simply swap gear at a Blacksmith — no job lockout.

Common Crafting Mistakes

Mistake 1: Smelting all T1 ores without keeping some rough ore for low-level alts. Mistake 2: Forging T3 weapons before reaching second job — class-locked items bind but cannot be equipped. Mistake 3: Spending Star Stones on throwaway test gear. Mistake 4: Ignoring the daily Smelting bonus — first three smelts each day grant double output. Mistake 5: Skipping polish sub-stat rerolls on T3+ weapons; two strong lines beat a single +1 to all stats.

If you ever doubt a recipe, the Refine Cost Planner and ASPD Calculator let you simulate outcomes before clicking confirm.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is crafting better than buying gear from the Exchange?
Crafting wins for class-locked weapons and gear sets you cannot buy. The Exchange wins for accessories and event-only items. Always compare crafting cost vs current market price before committing ore.
Can crafting replace refine?
No. Crafting produces the base item; refine upgrades it. Both are mandatory for endgame — craft first, refine second.
Do crafting materials share across characters?
Ores and ingots share via the account storage. Bound weapons stay on the crafting character unless the recipe is marked account-shared.
Where do I unlock Zenith Forge?
Complete the Blacksmith Initiation quest chain given by the Prontera smith after level 55 and second job advancement. One-time unlock per account.
